Tony's Review of Babel-17

Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany is a fascinating piece of science fiction built around the idea that language does more than describe reality. It can shape the way we think, what we notice, and even how we understand ourselves. Plus, influence what we do. It is it very much a character in this book.

The story follows Rydra Wong as she attempts to understand a mysterious language being used during an interstellar war. What begins as a code breaking problem gradually becomes something much deeper. The language itself is the real science fiction idea, and Delany uses it to explore identity, perception, and the relationship between words and thought.

This is where the book is strongest. Babel-17 treats language as a weapon. It's a unique idea, I found intriguing, even if difficult for me to fully buy into. This is a read for the concepts.
