Tony's Review of Hypnos

Hypnos by H. P. Lovecraft is a strange and dreamlike piece of horror built around obsession, altered states, and the danger of reaching too far beyond normal human experience.

The story feels distant from ordinary life almost immediately, as though the characters are already halfway removed from the real world. Lovecraft slowly builds the sense that their experiments are taking them somewhere they should not be going, and that whatever they discover may not allow them to return unchanged.

The weakness is that Hypnos can be difficult to follow. The story is deliberately vague, and some of the imagery feels more like a dream than a traditional narrative. Readers looking for a clear explanation of exactly what happens may find it frustrating. A big reason I can't rate this story higher than a three star.

A strange and effective Lovecraft story that reminds us curiosity can be dangerous when the answer lies somewhere humanity was never meant to go. A theme that deeper runs throughout his work.
