Emerging from Shadows: Poetry by Balroop Singh is a collection that looks at life from the perspective of individual development. The title fits the book well, because these poems are about how someone comes through life, loss, and death.

The collection can be taken as a whole or poem by poem. As with other works of hers I have read, I can see myself revisiting these pages. That, for me, is what you want to happen with a collection such as this. Things stick with you, and you go back to them.

One such poem was The Secret of Being Alive. For me, this one truly encapsulates midlife and how someone comes through it.

This collection is greater than the sum of its parts.

Just like we are.

It is easy to read, but the meanings stay with you. Very little else can be asked of a work of this nature.
